Philadelphia-based contemporary dance company RealLivePeople (RLP) announces their newest show, Would I Lie To You, as part of the 2014 Neighborhood Fringe. Would I lie to you? is a 55 minute exploration of the lies we tell and the naked truths they conceal, from the casual to the profound. The cast’s own lies, past and current, are at the core of this playful, revealing and explosive production. This world premiere will be performed at the Latvian Society, 531 N. 7th Street, from September 5-10.
Artistic Director Gina Hoch-Stall will be dancing with Sara Nye, Drew Kaiser, Megan Mazarick, Megan Quinn and Adrian Plascencia. In the company’s original style, the piece will be a mix of choreographed sections and tightly structured improvisation, with the dancers moving fluidly through the intersection between truth and lies. The performance will also include improvised mini-dances based directly on lies collected anonymously from the audience.
“Deception has always fascinated me. I enjoy the multiple layers of revelation, intimacy and truth. ” Hoch-Stall explained. “I chose to make a dance about lying because I think that movement and physical relationships, juxtaposed with text and storytelling, can reveal and articulate truths we are trying to hide, even from ourselves.”
RealLivePeople explores human experiences through firsthand stories and unspoken gestures; we focus on the spaces between, the quick look away and the light tap on the shoulder. Our work strives to balance inventive, athletic movement with poignant and provocative interactions that resonate with an audience. We tackle our subject matter from multiple perspectives, bringing in composers, artists and filmmakers to collaborate and even incorporating our audience’s opinions and stories into the work in real time. For us the work is about being human onstage—part performance, part real-life.
